Exotic Animals

Exotic pets are classified as any pet that is not a dog or a cat. Most veterinarians do not treat these types of pets, but Cascade Veterinary Hospital is well equipped and educated in treating unusual domestic pets. At Cascade we treat the following pets:

• Parrots/parakeets
• Pocket Pets (gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, hedgehogs)
• Ferrets
• Rabbits
• Amphibians (frogs and toads)
• Squirrels
• Rodents (rats and mice)
• Reptiles (lizards, iguanas, snakes, turtles and tortoises)

Cascade Veterinary Hospital recommends yearly visits for your exotic pet. They should be brought to our clinic in appropriate carriers to avoid unfortunate accidents and escapes.

Rabbits & Rodents: Yearly examinations are recommended at which time we will also determine if trimming teeth is in order. We will also check for external parasites. Neuter and spay procedures are highly recommend for these very fertile animals.

Ferrets: Vaccinations and routine blood work are performed yearly with special attention given to identify adrenal gland disease, pancreatic tumors and insulinomas. Spaying is considered to be an essential procedure for females due to fatal anemia.

Birds: Blood work is highly recommended due to the susceptibility of birds to liver, respiratory, and kidney disease. Beak trimming is also offered.

Reptiles: Our veterinarians will educate clients on proper nutrition and environmental care to prevent infectious disease and parasites.
